About Me
“Life is good for only two things, discovering mathematics and teaching mathematics” – Siméon Poisson
Welcome to my website. It’s kind of odd for someone like me to have a website. Being a self-described Luddite, I should be avoiding technology at all costs. After all, I cannot stand video games, cell phones or any type of social media. However, I like to think of myself as a practical Luddite – someone who believes that before technology is adopted, we should ask ourselves whether or not the technology actually improves our lives. (Unfortunately, in our modern society, most people don’t stop to ask such questions – and look at the results!) So, a place like this, a place to read, write and talk mathematics is a place where we can use technology to educate ourselves and, therefore, improve our lives.
Luddites of the world, have no fear! I still prefer to do math using pencil and paper. After all, there is no better sound than that of a pencil scratching across the paper, no better taste than a cedar pencil in your mouth, no better smell than a cedar pencil balancing on your lip. Try to experience any of that with a computer keyboard or mouse … it’s just not happening.
Before you go, a little bit about myself. By trade, I am mathematics teacher. I have both a B.S. and M.S. in mathematics and have been elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Mu Epsilon and Sigma Pi Sigma National Honor Societies. But, above all, I am a self-professed mathematical addict.
So, please enjoy this site. Feel free to add comments to any of my posts. Or, if you would prefer to send me an email, you can contact me at musingsonmath@gmail.com.
Dear musingsonmath,
I liked your website, especially the part of the coin and stamp collection. I am a mathematician and a coin-collector also, so it was something really nice for me.
Thanks,
Vahe
Dear Vahe,
I have one new item in my collection – a coin celebrating Farkas Bolyai. One of these days, when I have the time, I will take a picture and post an image.
Thanks for your comments and thanks for stopping by.
This is an awesome website….and as a collector of fountain pens, I found the information about Einstein’s Pelikan particularly interesting….I have a few myself……I tend to regress toward very find points and firm nibs, so my favortie pen is a Montegrappa Miya, that I bought about 10 years ago….Great website….Great stuff!!!
Thanks for the compliment! My favorite pen is an old refurbished Estie – I love using the lever to fill it up.
Come back any time!
Interesting site, musingsonmath! I once had a middle school math teacher who was crazed over Euler, Gauss, Poisson, etc etc etc. It only seems fitting that he would eventually have a blog dedicated to the study and research of math.
I hope you’re doing well, and wanted to let you know that some of your old students ended up with a fondness for math themselves.
Sean
Great to hear from you. You should send me an email and let me know how things are going!
I have a suspicion about the mysterious luddite mathematician behind this site.
From one of your ex students now in France!!! (you might guess who)
